Brand Experience

The challenge

Students are under more pressure than ever before. A raised awareness around students’ mental wellness is pushing many universities to begin exploring different ways to help students de-stress. The goal was to design a non-denominational space where students can relax and unwind in whatever way they need. Headspace’s mission to improve the health and happiness of the world and their expansive efforts to normalize meditative practice made them the perfect brand identity for this project.

my research showed that 74.5% of college students who responded either do not have access to,
or are not aware of, a space like this on their campus.

the insight

A survey of 90 students across 21 universities was integral in identifying the types of students that would use the space, understanding how they would use the space and the basic needs the space would have to meet.

WHat do they Need?

cleanliness and sanitation
comfort
ample sized space
privacy
ease and proximity
minimized stigmas
quiet

the approach

After developing multiple concepts, I interviewed four students that fell into all three defined student types. They were traditional students that had experience with both high stress and anxiety and meditation. Based off their feedback, I spent time studying campus architecture and received guidance from architecture and interior design students before finalizing the form and structure of the space.

the solution

The final concept is a self sufficient, multi-purpose, non-denominational room that can be utilized by the user however they see fit in order to find a little headspace in the chaos of everyday life. For the final prototype, a 3D Virtual Reality headset was used to allow viewer’s a 360º view inside of the space.

the strategy

By partnering with Headspace, businesses, schools, and universities would be able to incorporate Headspace habits into the work environment. This has the potential to boost creativity, efficiency, and happiness.  By partnering with commercial businesses and schools, the Headspace brand can boost exposure and make strides towards normalizing meditation and mindfulness as a part of everyday life.

This project was grounded in trend research, in user research, in interviews, and in the insight provided by interior design and architecture students. Each piece integral in designing this space so that it met the demands students while providing a tactile and immersive experience for the Headspace brand.
